Thank you to all who came last Saturday for our first meeting of 2016!

It was great to be in our new venue. The Paraparaumu Community Centre is a great place to host meetings like ours with a great location, great kitchen facilities and a fenced garden in the back that the children can run and play.

For the first meeting of the year we decided to give continuation to the theme of the "Universe and our Solar System", after visiting the Carter Observatory in Wellington last year and seeing the Big Bang exhibition. This time we talked about our planet in relation to the Universe and the other planets in our system.

The kids got involved and it was really good to see their interest in a subject like this. We talked about our Galaxy, the Milky Way and how it is just one of hundreds of billions of galaxies!! Trillions of stars fill the Universe. Can you imagine how many other planets in the Universe? We couldn't put a number on it!!

For our activity, we all came together in a team effort to build our own Solar System model that looked great when finished. Have a look at the pictures below.

We had loads of fun with some interesting facts about each of the planets in the Solar System and the children did a great job at our quiz after the presentation! Asteroids, giant moons, comets and dwarf planets were also in the agenda. Great fun!

We also had our usual quiz about the flags adding this time the capital cities of each country... and wow!! The children are getting really good at it! Well done to all.

In the end, we had some food and the parents had some time to catch up with others over a relaxing cuppa.

Here are some pictures of our day. Enjoy!
